Breanna Young, Hons. B.Sc., is greatly enjoying being a member of the Sand Story family for the duration of the 2016/2017 academic year. After completing her bachelor’s degree in Psychology/Biology at Acadia University, Breanna entered the Psychology Doctorate degree in Clinical Psychology at Adler University. Currently in her third year of study, Breanna is continually developing her therapeutic orientation with her clients. Breanna takes an attachment-based perspective to conceptualize an individual’s presenting concerns. Further, she uses an approach appropriate to each client that she sees, integrating modalities such as Play Therapy, Emotion-Focused Therapy, Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy, and Narrative Therapy into her work.

Before her practicum began at Sand Story, Breanna worked with at-risk youth at Broadway Youth Resource Centre (BYRC) for two years. She provided emotional and practical support for their various needs, and also co-created a Circle of Courage group with a local First Nations elder and staff member. This group was open to individuals of all backgrounds and focused on healing and personal growth. Breanna also has experience administering psychoeducational assessments and understands the learning profiles of individuals with behavioral and emotional difficulties. She has worked with many youth, both from BYRC and other agencies, to help them attain academic and emotional support to aid them in succeeding at school. Additionally, Breanna has a wide range of volunteer experiences both with children and adults, including working with children with intellectual disabilities, providing support at a nursing home, and travelling abroad with an international volunteer organization, all of which helps her bring an empathetic and open perspective to her client’s needs.

Overall, Breanna uses a client-centered, culturally sensitive approach to form a deep and meaningful relationship with her clients. Breanna sees parents, youth, children and adults with a wide range of presenting problems. Breanna is also an experienced clinician providing thorough psychoeducational assessments for students from Elementary to Post-Secondary school. She brings an enthusiastic warmth to her attachment-based work, offering play therapy, Parenting Consultation, and therapy.
